IES Interactive Logo Leiden University Medical Center

The Leiden University Medical Center in Leiden, Netherlands, offers study programs that vary from the university study programs in Medicine or Biomedical Sciences to the anesthetics assistant study program, from the Medical specialist study program to the Specialist nursing study program, and from postgraduate continued training and instruction courses for doctors to resuscitation courses. The LUMC has a long tradition in developing e-learning and hosts MedicalEducation.nl, the national hub for medical e-learning in the Netherlands. The organization has been using Turning Technologies' ResponseCards in teaching activities for five years and developed several applications, including an audience thermometer and web-based form.

The audience thermometer is an application which enables the audience to respond at any time. It can be used to measure the "mood" of the audience, or its (change in) viewpoint during a debate. If the audience stops responding, or if the responses become balanced, the thermometer gradually goes to the zero mark, or the smiley gradually gets a "neutral" face. Positive and negative moods are distinguished by color. In a public debate, the audience can express its viewpoint and change it at any time on a thesis using the 1, 2, 3 keys (pro, neutral, con). The overall viewpoint is shown as a balance. The application generates an instruction sheet for the audience that reflects the actual settings of the application. The teacher can see a curve of overall response value vs. time. Teachers can also view "demographics," showing thermometers, smileys or balances for multiple groups.

Most of the e-learning programs are web-based and many contain form elements. One application allows a group of students to answer questions in a web-based form and play against pre-recorded games of other students. The teacher can see a small graph of the responses. If votes are stalled, the teacher can force an answer, or the program can randomly select one. Multiple questions on one page are processed sequentially. Starting/stopping of the poll can be done manually or automatically. After the poll, the application can automatically jump to the next question or submit the form. If the next web page is a form again, the whole process starts all over. The session can be logged for later analysis.
