Turning Technologies Provides Response Technology for MTV's Rock Band Battle

Audience Members Use Response Technology to vote for their favorite Rock Band

Youngstown, OH – (November 19, 2008) – Turning Technologies LLC, a leader in the response industry, through its alliance with Quick Tally® Interactive, the top choice for instant voting during television events, provided audience polling for the new MTV reality show entitled Rock Band Battle. Audience members used Turning's polling software, TurningPoint® and ResponseCard® keypads to vote for their favorite group performing songs from the video game Rock Band 2.

The program spawned from the multi-million unit selling video game Rock Band and its sequel released this September, Rock Band 2. Developed by Harmonix, published by MTV and distributed by EA Games, Rock Band is a music/rhythm game where contestants use controllers modeled after instruments to play along with a selected song. Instruments available for contestants to play include a microphone, a guitar that doubles as a bass and a drum set.

In Rock Band Battle, groups of four participants joined together to form bands and perform songs using the available game instruments in front of a live audience. Five bands were selected to perform and the top two were chosen by a combination of audience vote and game score to battle it out for the winning spot. Produced by Mark Burnett of Survivor and The Apprentice fame, a casting call was posted on Craigslist seeking "four people to form their own band and show us their stuff live on stage for the chance to win the Ultimate Rock Band Experience."

Hosted by comedian Dan Levy with actress Carrie Keagan, the winner of the competition was the first group to perform, Scared Puppy. The band walked away with a big screen LG TV, Cambridge SoundWorks Newton theater system, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Rock Band 2 Special Edition Bundle from MTV Games for Xbox 360. The show premiered on MTV at 1 p.m. EST on Saturday, November 15, 2008.

TurningPoint in conjunction with credit card size ResponseCard keypads, creates a wireless audience response and voting system that enables instant polling within Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentations and other applications. While audiences of Rock Band Battle took advantage of TurningPoint's polling function, presenters seeking to add engagement and improve retention find audience response technology a useful tool for effective, interactive presentations in training and meeting environments.

"Our products combined with Quick Tally’s and MTV’s innovative application produced another state-of-the-art audience response solution for the entertainment industry," said Turning's Vice President of Professional Sales, Tod Burkert. "Our technology offers instant, easy polling that can be utilized in various markets, including the entertainment industry. With the growing popularity of reality television contests, we see a big future for our response systems."
