Even though much research surrounds the positive impact of the use of educational games, they are not widely adopted in most curriculum due to the challenges of measuring their impact on student achievement in the classroom. The” Turn Up Engagement – Edugaming” workshop provides educators with a proven approach that engages students and results in measurable increases in student learning.

Workshop Overview:

 Evolution and Research Foundation to Serious Games - Dr. Chris Dede
Dr. Chris Dede
Morning Session

Dr. Dede, a professor at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education and a leading researcher in using multiuser virtual environments for assessing student learning, will detail curriculum and research results based on his findings as a lead researcher for the River City Project, a Multi-User Virtual Environment for Learning Scientific Inquiry and 21st Century SkillsAdditionally and his efforts with the the EcoMuve Project, a Multi-User Virtual Environment (MUVE)-based ecosystems science curriculum for middle school students. Dr. Dede’s research interests span emerging technologies for learning and includes a grant from the U.S. Department of Education Star Schools initiative to development and study augmented reality simulations using wireless mobile devices.
 

 Practical Implementation of Game Based Learning & Game Design - Dr. Tina Sartori

Afternoon Session

Dr. Sartori will demonstrate specific open source games and virtual learning environments that will engage students in each of the core content areas. Workshop attendees will be provided access to both the games and corresponding lessons. GameMaker Pro will be demonstrated as an open source game design software that can be used to transform traditional technology courses into a video game design course that teaches all of the ISTE standards. The use of TurningPoint student response systems will be explored as a tool to collect the necessary data to prove the effectiveness of educational gaming.
